Smokybrown Cockroach in Mobile, AL (Periplaneta fuliginosa)
The smokybrown cockroach is the moisture-and-canopy cockroach
of the Gulf Coast Alabama corridor. Distinct from the larger American
cockroach (palmetto bug), the smokybrown is mahogany-dark and
critically tied to constant moisture — tree holes, live oak
canopy, gutters, woodpiles, and damp crawl space. Heaviest pressure
in mature-canopy Mobile and Baldwin neighborhoods. ADAI HPC-certified
treatment.
Identification
- Size: 1.25–1.5 inches as adults.
- Color: uniform dark mahogany; no yellow figure-8
marking (which distinguishes from American cockroach). - Flight: capable of short flights in warm humid
conditions. - Moisture dependency: requires constant access to
water; will not establish in arid environments.
Why mature-canopy Mobile / Baldwin neighborhoods get heavy pressure
- Live oak canopy. Spring Hill, Old Dauphin Way,
Midtown Mobile, Point Clear, and Fairhope’s historic district all
carry dense interlocking canopy and abundant tree-hole moisture. - Crawl-space humidity. Older Mobile homes with
unvapor-barriered crawl spaces stay continuously humid — ideal
smokybrown habitat. - Gutter and downspout debris. Mobile’s heavy
leaf-fall (live oak, southern magnolia, water oak) clogs gutters and
creates permanent moisture pockets next to siding. - Woodpile and mulch. Decorative mulch beds
adjacent to siding are textbook harborage.
Treatment approaches our technicians use
- Perimeter exterior treatment — the primary
intervention. Pyrethroid or non-repellent residual along the
structure perimeter, focused on the gutter line, woodpile
adjacency, and crawl-space vents. - Moisture remediation guidance — vapor
barrier in crawl space, gutter cleaning, mulch pull-back from
siding. - Interior gel bait + IGR if smokybrowns have
pushed indoors. - Tree-hole and gutter-line treatment for severe
canopy populations.

ADAI licensing is administered under Chapter 28, Title 2, Code of Alabama 1975 and Chapter 80-1-13 of the Alabama Administrative Code.
What’s the typical response time?
Routine dispatch: under 60 seconds on the call. On-site arrival: 2โ4 hours during business hours (7amโ9pm CT, 7 days) for most Mobile County and Baldwin County service areas. Emergency calls are routed to operators on 24/7 on-call rotation.
Do you cover my area in Mobile or Baldwin County?
